How we work?

  • Each Member commits to donating $100 per meeting, four times a year (4 consecutive meetings from date of joining the organization). Meetings are diligently conducted in one hour or less.
  • Any member who has registered by signing a Commitment Form, and who is current with her donations, may nominate an organization for consideration at a meeting.
  • Representatives from the three randomly selected organizations will make a five-minute presentation about the organization to the group.
  • Each registered member who is current with her donations will vote (by ballot) for one of the three organizations.
  • Each member will write a cheque for $100 to the organization receiving the most votes.
  • The selected organization will receive a group donation of $10,000 or more, depending on the number of members!
  • Members who did not vote for the selected organization agree to make their donation regardless.
  • Members will receive a tax receipt directly from the organization.
  • Members who are unable to attend a meeting are obligated to give their cheque to another Member to deliver on their behalf.

Which charitable organizations are eligible for consideration by the group?

In order to be considered at a meeting, the organization must be based in Prince Edward Island and must be a registered not-for-profit or charitable organization eligible to provide tax receipts for donations. It must be established for at least 1 year (no start-ups). No national or international charities, programs or organizations will be considered at this time as the current focus is on contributing to our local community, unless all funds stay on PEI for a local project.

An organization that is selected for the group donation may be considered again after a 3-year period. The exception is a specific program within a large organization (for example a specific department or program within a hospital), which may be considered again after one year for a different program or department.

Members nominate a charitable organization for consideration upon registering for each meeting. Nominations are created as a draw and 3 nominees are drawn by a Chartered Accountant one week prior to the event. Representatives of the selected charities are asked to prepare a 5-minute presentation to be given at the upcoming meeting and then the members vote. The organization with the greatest number of votes is the recipient of the funds.

How is the organization that receives the group donation chosen?

When a member registers, she can nominate a local organization. The organizers of the meeting will collect the names of the organizations and three organizations will be drawn by a Chartered Accountant one week before the event.

How does a member choose the successful organization at the meeting?

Representatives of the three drawn organizations will be contacted and asked to give a short 5-minute presentation at the meeting as to why their organization should receive the donation. We encourage members to participate by submitting the names of local, needy, charitable organizations! After the three presentations, each member is given a ballot to select their preferred charity.

Once a charity receives funding, do they have any responsibility to 100 Women Who Care?

A charity that receives funding will send tax receipts to each member who donated. In addition, they will be asked to make a short presentation at a subsequent meeting to explain how the money we donated was or is being used.

What if I cannot attend a meeting?

If a member cannot attend a meeting she can do one of two things:

  1. She can send in a blank, signed cheque with a trusted friend to the meeting (preferred). The friend will write in the name of the charity that is chosen on the cheque and give it to the organizers on her behalf. The friend may not vote on behalf of the absent member. We can only count the votes of members who are present at the meeting;
  2. The member can drop off her cheque at designated locations two business days before the meeting.

Can I just send the donation to the charity myself?

Because the goal of 100 Women Who Care – Prince County PEI is to make a large donation on behalf of the whole group, the answer is no. We want to be able to support this endeavor and give $10,000+ dollars at a time to make a large impact in our community with each member’s donation being part of the larger donation. This is the power of joining forces! As well, by contributing through the meeting, it keeps your membership in good standing.

How long do the meetings last?
